The Jeep Wrangler TJ was introduced in 1996 as the new 1997 Jeep Wrangler model. To the relief of many Jeep aficionados, the rectangular headlights from the YJ series were gone, and replaced with the traditional, iconic round headlights the Jeep brand had become known for over the course of their Jeep CJ line. Alongside the iconic round headlights, the Wrangler TJ also incorporated the use of a coil-spring suspension for the first time in a Wrangler model. Although the coil-spring caused some concern, Jeep off roaders discovered that the new coil-spring suspensions had better off-road capabilities than its previous models.
In 2004, Jeep released a longer version of the Wrangler TJ called the Wrangler TJ Unlimited—which was later nicknamed Wrangler LJ by the Jeep community. The Wrangler TJ and LJ were the last 2-door model Jeeps—that changed with the Wrangler JKU—and to some it is still the last “real Jeep”. While to others the Jeep brand has only grown and evolved.
